A truth that’s helped me with forgiving myself: “You didn’t get to where you are all by yourself.” Nobody does. The way you were raised, the things you were taught, the people who hurt you—all of it shaped you. Of course, that doesn’t erase what happened. But it does help explain it. And understanding why you did something (or are the way you are) is where compassion for yourself actually starts.
