Why Trying to Be Perfect Is Ruining Your Faith

Kyle WinklerBy Kyle Winkler
Author & Bible Teacher

After a workshop I gave a few months ago, I overheard a conversation that went something like this:

“I know that we can’t be perfect, but we are supposed to TRY.”

My book, Permission to Be Imperfect, had just been released, so I was extra interested to hear their thoughts.

They cited Jesus from His Sermon on the Mount: “But you are to be perfect, even as your Father in heaven is perfect” (Matthew 5:48).

Then they considered all the ways to try to be better—disciplines like more Bible study, more prayer, more fasting.

Their discussion didn’t surprise me. I believed and did the same for years.

Until I realized the toll of my striving AND learned the TRUTH about why Jesus said what He said.

May this truth set you free. …
