Hope During a Holiday that Hurts

Christmas is called “the most wonderful time of the year.”

But for many, it feels like the most painful.

The lights and laughter only highlight what’s missing: the marriage that never happened, the loved one who’s gone, the dreams that didn’t come true.

Maybe life looks nothing like you planned.

If that’s you, take heart: You’re not broken, you’re not forgotten … and you’re not alone.

The Bible is full of people whose lives didn’t go as they imagined:

  • Paul wrote letters from prison,
  • David poured out laments,
  • Job lost almost everything.

Yet, none of these disappointments defined them. And yours doesn’t define you either.

Peace doesn’t come from pretending everything’s fine. It begins by being real, which might include grieving what was lost or what isn’t.

It definitely includes choosing to trust God with what is.

Jesus said, “Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”

Friend, your hope isn’t in a perfect holiday or a changed circumstance; it’s in a perfect Savior who brought peace between God and you (see Colossians 1:20).

So this Christmas, don’t let expectations blind you to the beauty of the life you have. It may not be what you pictured, but it’s still a story God can use.

Remember, the same Jesus whose birth we celebrate is with you—right here, right now—writing redemption into your reality.
