By Ever read Jesus’ words in Matthew 12:31—“Every sin and blasphemy can be forgiven—except blasphemy against the Holy Spirit”—and felt a chill run down your spine?
Maybe you’ve wondered, Did I do that? Is God done with me?
You’re not alone.
John Bunyan, author of The Pilgrim’s Progress, once feared the same. Countless emails I receive echo it too: “I’ve messed up too many times. Has God given up on me?”
But here’s the truth: Jesus wasn’t talking about your biggest mistake. Not divorce, not addiction, not something sexual. Not anything you’re thinking.
He was speaking to religious leaders who accused Him of being from the devil. Their hardened unbelief was the blasphemy, not your failure.
Notice what Jesus said first: “Every sin can be forgiven.”
And that was before the cross. Because of the cross, every sin is forgiven.
Every. Single. One.
So if you fear you’ve gone too far, hear this: You haven’t.
God hasn’t left you. He’s not even thinking about it. In fact, Scripture says:
- nothing can separate you from His love (Romans 8:38–39).
- the Holy Spirit will never leave you (John 14:16).
- you are complete through your union with Christ (Colossians 2:10).
Your standing with God isn’t based on your performance; it’s based on His promise.
Forgiveness isn’t fragile. Adoption into God’s family is irrevocable. And salvation fused you with Him in a way that can’t be undone.
Be assured, the “unpardonable sin” isn’t your story. Grace is. And that means God is for you… forever.
