Ever Notice This About Rules?

When we want to do better, we often make more rules.

We tell ourselves what to stop doing.

Don’t eat that.
Don’t say that.
Don’t mess up again.

At first, this feels helpful. We may behave better for a little while. But soon, something strange happens.

The more we think about what we should not do, the more we end up doing it.

This is how our minds and bodies work.

Whatever we think about the most grows stronger. When we focus on avoiding the wrong thing, our mind keeps circling back to it, until we fall into it.

Real change happens a different way.

It happens when we focus on something good instead of only avoiding something bad. When we know what we are moving toward, not just what we should stay away from.

That’s why Scripture encourages us to renew our minds and think on things that are true, good and right (Romans 12:2; Philippians 4:8).

As we focus on the truth about God’s goodness—and who He says we are in Christ—our attitudes and actions begin to change on their own. The result is more peace, more confidence and often better behavior too.

A little help with this can make a big difference.

My Think On These Things journal is designed to train your mind in a simple, grace‑based way. It shares life‑giving truths about God, about you and about life, then gives you space to reflect on those truths and apply them personally.

If you’re interested, I’d love to send you a copy with free shipping in the United States.

Mostly, though, I want you to remember that lasting change doesn’t begin with better rules.

It begins with better thoughts.

One of my favorites to start with is this: “God is good, and I am good with God.”
