A few years ago, I shared a meme on social media that said, “Jesus called the Holy Spirit ‘the Advocate,’ and advocates don’t beat people up, they help them up.”
This sparked quite a debate in the comments. People responded with:
- “BUT He disciplines those He loves.”
- “BUT you shouldn’t grieve the Holy Spirit.”
- “BUT He convicts of sin.”
These arguments are based on scripture, BUT there’s more to them than you might know.
In the video below, I address 3 major misconceptions about the Holy Spirit concerning His discipline, grief, and conviction of sin.
Here are some hints:
- The true meaning of “discipline” in the Bible is rooted in love, not punishment.
- Grieving the Spirit is about care, not condemnation.
- Conviction of sin is about belief, not guilt.

In my book, Permission to Be Imperfect, I reveal much more about the Holy Spirit—particularly in a chapter titled, “The God Who Is On Your Side.”
